Wellcode · Dog Identifier
Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 20, 2026
This policy explains what personal data Dog Identifier handles, why, who processes it, how long it is kept and what your rights are. It covers the Dog Identifier app for iPhone and Android, listed as "Dog Scanner—Breed Identifier" on the App Store and "Dog Identifier—Breed Scanner" on Google Play (the "app").
In short: there is no account and no sign-in. The photo you scan is sent to an AI service run by Google, which names the breed; we do not keep it on any server of ours. Your history of scans stays on your phone. We receive crash reports and, if you subscribe, the details of your subscription. We do not show ads, we do not sell your data and we do not track you across other companies' apps and websites.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is:
Wellcode S.r.l.s.
Via Reggio 5/A, 42015 Correggio (RE), Italy
VAT no. IT02956860353
Email: support@wellcode.it
Write to that address for any question about this policy or to exercise your rights (section 10).
2. What the app does with your data
The photo you scan
To identify a dog you take a photo with the camera or pick one from your library. The app asks for access to the camera; for the library it uses the system's photo picker, so it only ever sees the photo you choose, not the rest of your library.
Before sending it, the app shrinks the photo to at most 512 pixels on its longest side and re-encodes it without its metadata, such as the camera model and the location where it was taken. It then sends it to Google's AI service (see section 4) together with a short instruction that contains your device's language, so the answer comes back in your language, and whether to use metric or imperial units. The service answers with the breed, how confident it is and the details shown on the result screen.
The photo is sent as it is: if a person, a house number or anything else appears in it, that is sent too. Avoid scanning photos of people who have not agreed to it.
Your history, on your phone
Each scan is saved on your device only: the photo, the answer, the date and whether you marked it as a favourite. It never reaches us. You can delete a scan from the history at any time, which deletes its photo too; uninstalling the app deletes the whole history. Like any other app data, it may be included in your phone's own backup (iCloud or Google), depending on your device settings.
The app also keeps a few settings on your device: whether you finished the introduction, your theme, when you first opened it, when and how often it asked you for a rating, whether you have already seen a full answer, and how many free scans you used today. The daily count is kept in the system's secure storage; on iPhone it can survive uninstalling the app.
Subscription data
If you subscribe to Dog Identifier Pro, the payment is made to Apple through the App Store or to Google through Google Play. We never receive your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to know whether your subscription is active: it receives from the store the product, the price and currency, the dates of purchase, renewal and expiry, whether you are in a free trial, the country of your store account and the store's transaction identifiers, linked to a random identifier that the app creates on your device. With each request RevenueCat also receives technical information about your device: its model, operating system and app version, language settings, IP address and, on iPhone, the identifier Apple assigns to our apps on your device (not the advertising identifier). None of this is linked to your name or email address.
On iPhone, the app also obtains a token from Apple's AdServices framework, which RevenueCat hands to Apple to learn whether the app was installed from an Apple Ads campaign on the App Store. Apple answers only with information about the campaign, such as its ad group and keyword; this does not use your device's advertising identifier and does not require tracking permission.
Crash and error reports
When the app crashes or something goes wrong — a scan that fails, a store that does not answer — the app sends a report to Firebase Crashlytics: device model, operating system and its version, app version, free memory and disk space, whether the app was in the foreground, the technical details of the error, and a random identifier of the installation. Reports never include your photos, the answers or your history, and are not linked to you.
App configuration
At launch the app downloads its settings from Firebase Remote Config, such as which AI models to use. To do so it sends a random identifier of the installation, the app version, the operating system and its version, and your device's language, country and time zone.
When you contact us
If you send us feedback or write to us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, including any information you choose to add.
What the app does not collect
There is no account, so we do not have your name, email address or phone number unless you write to us. The app does not collect your location, your contacts, your device's advertising identifier, or any analytics about how you use it. It does not show ads. It never uses the microphone.
3. Why we use your data and on what legal basis
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis (GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Identifying the dog in the photo you scan | The photo, device language and units | Performance of our contract with you (art. 6(1)(b)) |
| Selling Pro, unlocking it on your device, handling renewals, restores and refunds | Subscription data, random app identifier, device information | Performance of the contract (art. 6(1)(b)); legal obligations for accounting and tax (art. 6(1)(c)) |
| Finding and fixing crashes and errors, keeping the app working | Crash and error reports, installation identifier | Legitimate interest in a reliable app (art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Configuring the app without a new release, for example switching AI model | Installation identifier, app and operating system version, language, country and time zone | Legitimate interest in running the service (art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Measuring whether our App Store ads bring subscribers | Campaign attribution from Apple, subscription data | Legitimate interest in measuring our advertising (art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Answering your messages | Email address, what you write | Legitimate interest in replying to you (art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Complying with the law and defending our rights | Any data needed in the specific case | Legal obligation (art. 6(1)(c)); legitimate interest (art. 6(1)(f)) |
The identification is produced automatically by an AI model, but it is only information about a dog: it has no legal or similarly significant effect on you.
4. Who processes your data
We do not sell or rent personal data. We have no servers of our own: the app talks directly to the providers below, which process the data on our behalf and under contracts that bind them to use it only to provide their service to us, except where the table says otherwise.
| Provider | What it does for us | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC — Gemini API, through Firebase AI Logic | Analysing the photo you scan and writing the answer | Any country where Google has facilities, including the United States |
| Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC — Firebase Crashlytics and Remote Config | Crash and error reports; app configuration | United States and EU |
| RevenueCat Inc. | Managing subscriptions across the two stores | United States |
| Apple Inc. / Apple Distribution International; Google (Google Play) | Selling the subscription and taking the payment; ad attribution on the App Store. As sellers they act as independent controllers under their own privacy policies | EU and United States |
What Google does with the photo. Under the terms that apply to us, Google does not use the photos you scan or the answers to train or improve its models or products. It keeps them for a limited period only to detect abuse of its service and to meet legal obligations, and may store them temporarily in any country where it operates. We do not receive or keep the photo anywhere outside your phone.
We may also disclose data when the law requires it, for example to a court or a public authority, and to a buyer if Wellcode or the app is ever sold, in which case this policy will continue to protect your data.
5. Transfers outside the European Union
Some of the providers above are based in the United States or may process data there. Those transfers are covered by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, where the provider is certified under it, or by the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission. You can ask us for a copy of the safeguards that apply.
6. How long data is kept
- Your history and its photos: on your device, until you delete them or uninstall the app.
- Photos sent for analysis: we do not keep them. Google keeps them for a limited period only to detect abuse, as described in section 4.
- Crash and error reports: 90 days.
- Subscription data: for as long as the subscription is active, and afterwards for as long as needed to handle refunds, disputes and our legal obligations. The records of the purchase itself are kept by Apple or Google under their own policies.
- Emails you send us: for as long as needed to answer you and follow up on the same issue.
7. Deleting your data
Since there is no account, there is no account to delete. To delete a scan, open it in the history and delete it; to delete everything the app keeps on your phone, uninstall it. Uninstalling does not cancel a subscription: cancel it from your App Store or Google Play account settings.
To have your subscription data deleted from RevenueCat, write to us with the order number from your App Store or Google Play receipt, so that we can find it. Crash reports are not linked to you, so we cannot pick out yours; they are deleted automatically after 90 days.
8. Cookies
The app does not use cookies. These pages are hosted on Firebase Hosting (Google), which receives your IP address to deliver them; they set no cookies and load nothing from other websites.
9. Security
Everything the app sends travels encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). Your history stays inside the app's private storage on your device, protected by your phone's own security. No system is perfectly secure: if a breach affecting your data occurs, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires, as far as we are able to reach you.
10. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- access your data and receive a copy of it;
- rectify data that is inaccurate or incomplete;
- erase your data (see section 7);
- restrict processing in certain cases;
- data portability: receive the data you gave us in a structured, machine-readable format;
- object at any time to processing based on our legitimate interest.
To exercise them, write to support@wellcode.it. We reply within one month, free of charge. Because the app has no account, we hold very little that can be traced back to you: we may ask for details, such as the order number of a purchase, to find the data that concerns you.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority — in Italy, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali — or with the authority of the country where you live or work.
11. Children
Dog Identifier is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when the app changes the way it handles personal data, and publish the new version on this page with its date. If the changes are significant — in particular, if we want to use your data for a new purpose — we will tell you in the app before they take effect, and ask for your consent where it is required.
